Cat Trees for Modern Homes by Aelfie and Michael Yarinsky
Originally designed and created for the ODD Experiments show the Yarfie series of cat trees for modern homes by Aelfie and Michael Varinsky where created to follow the criteria of “highly crafted pieces that have a much weaker grasp on the functional elements that make their design – design”.
Aelfie is a rug business owned and operated by Aelfie Oudghiri who designed the geometric rug portions of the cat trees. The rug portions have the added benefit of doubling as cat scratchers.
Michael Yarinsky is an interdisciplinary designer in the fields of architecture, interiors and furniture. Michael also runs Brooklyn’s Cooler Gallery where the ODD Experiments show was held in May of 2017.
The idea behind the Yarfie cat trees was a creation somewhere between cat furniture and0 sculpture. Something people would want in their homes whether for a cat or not.
Yarfie cat posts are CNC milled ash plywood with a flat weave rug, making these cat trees triple purpose as art, cat posts and cat scratchers.
The Yarfie cat posts are oversized in scale to emphasize their artistic value and to give cats something to really sink their claws into.
While the original Yarfie cat posts are over scale (making them perfect for modern homes, there are plans in the works to create a smaller version as well.
One of the Yarfie designs is not a cat post at all but is a cute cat home with a scratching post roof and a profile more like a rolling skateboard park than a cat home.
The tall cat trees have the shape of a swishing cat tail and the flat weave rugs are designed in contemporary patterns. The combination is part art, part sculpture, part function.
Aelfies contemporary flat weave rug patterns add colour and texture to Yarfie’s otherwise minimalist profile.
