Theatrical Lighting by Marcantonio is Ironic and Super Fun
With his love of irony, Marcantonio is able to pull from his theatrical background to create lighting designs that are full of storytelling in a whimsically fun sort of way. As he puts it “If a good idea is even fun, I cannot resist to realize it”.
Just a Drag (Gorilla with Lamp) is a seriously fun gorilla with a torn off piece of brass chandelier in his mouth as though it where a pipe and he was taking a “drag” from it. To confirm the tearing off of the light fixture, a section of electric cable is still attached to the brass but somehow the light is still on - irony.
What a Boar (Boar with Lamps) is a bored boar who destroyed a brass chandelier and is cut with the bit between his teeth so to speak – definitely a piece of theatrical lighting wouldn’t you say?
5 Minutes Alone… (Dog with Lamp) references the idea that you simply cannot leave a Jack Russel alone for 5 minutes because he will disassemble any furniture piece he is left with. Never having lived with a Jack Russel I cannot confirm or deny this theatrical lighting idea.
Before the Beginning (Child with Chandelier) is considered by Marcantonio to be one of his more intimate pieces. The child is holding a small “Maria Teresa” style of chandelier, looking at the reflections presented by the crystals much the same way an artist observes reality. Marcantonio says “like the child I loose myself in the parallels that I find between the shape of the chandelier and the idea of an atom”…”as if the child were holding up a small universe”…”but also the origins of this poem, his one, which is born at this moment, before the beginning”.
She’s in Love but She doesn’t Know it Yet (Giraffe with Chandelier) represents a dreamlike scene of a giraffe that goes for a walk with a chandelier in its mouth, the roads are illuminated by the light, her head is in the clouds because she is in love but doesn’t know it yet because her heart is very far away from her head.
Ale Piantana is a real man that has become an object through the casting of himself and is the first piece in a collection that uses the human body in different ways (hangers, table, pouf).
The Monkey Lamp comes in three different positions exploring their environment while clutching an LED bulb. Did they come into a house and steal the bulb or where they simply prepared, you decide?
3 Grey Mice was a light design conceived before any of the broken chandelier theatrical lighting and although full of hidden meanings and possible story lines Marcantonio does not supply the tale behind the design. I’m just glad they still have their tails – or is that tales?
